Located in the Elk Valley, Fernie is a paradise for the outdoor enthusiast. A plethora of options await for fun in the sun or snow. Stay in town and enjoy the "Griz Days" winter carnival or put on your sunhat and discover Fernie through the heritage walking tour. For a summer outdoor adventurer, Fernie is the starting point for a number of hiking and mountain biking trails. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled, you may spot a herd of Elk. If you prefer water to land, Elk River offers great kayaking and rafting. The fisherman won’t be forgotten here, as Elk River is a favoured spot for fly-fishing.

When snow makes its first appearance in late fall, snowboarders and skiers aren't far behind, cutting through the legendary Rocky Mountain powder. Try snowshoeing or snowmobiling throughout the valley, or for a change of pace, see the sights from a dogsled. During the last weekend of February, join Fernie as the town gets together to celebrate Griz Days. Enjoy a pancake breakfast, sign up a team for the Original Canadian Street Hockey Tournament, and then head up to the Fernie Alpine resort to watch the torchlight parade and firework show.

Fernie is located on Highway 3, 97 km (60 mi.) east of Cranbrook. Scheduled bus routes access the town. Commercial airlines fly into the Cranbrook airport, 97 km west of Fernie. Population: 5,203 Elevation: 1009 m (3,310 ft.)
